What Spain’s Populist, Gender-Neutral Mayoral Shift Could Mean for America in 2016
Last weekend, the Spanish cities of Madrid and Barcelona
put the official celebratory touches on a revolutionary transition that
occurred during May’s municipal elections. In Madrid, 71 year-old
retired judge Manuela Carmena’s supporters leveraged a bit of the Obama
slogan magic (“Yes We Can!”) in a jubilant mayoral oath of office
ceremony that promised real populist change for the third largest city
in the European Union.
Throughout her campaign, Carmena warned both
supporters and detractors that she and her team “want to lead by
listening to people who don’t use fancy titles to address us…We’re
creating a new kind of politics that doesn’t fit within the
conventions…Get ready.”
621 kilometers away, housing market reform champion
Ada Colau, 41, became the first-ever female mayor of Barcelona, claiming
victory with a platform that includes an anti-eviction approach for
struggling homeowners. The rise to power of the two women in two
different Spanish cities is striking for a number of reasons.
Firstly, Spain’s conservative Popular Party, which currently runs the national government, has struggled mightily
to reverse the country’s losses in the wake of the Great Recession.
This party ruled Madrid for 24 years prior to Carmena’s win at the
polls. Not any longer. And in a commitment to fellow Barcelonians which
demonstrates that change begins with the executive office, a June 14 report from RT.com
states that Colau’s “administration will now draft a list of 30
measures aimed at creating jobs and fighting corruption. Along with her
colleague in Madrid, Colau announced that she will slash her salary from
€140,000, down to €35,000.”
Beyond the profound shift in political party loyalty
among voters in the EU’s fifth-largest economy, where the unemployment
rate hovers around 24 percent, the disparate ages of the new mayors is
also significant. In a 2016 American Presidential primary contest where
GOP candidates such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio are looking to frame
the election as a “generational choice,”
the voters of Madrid and Barcelona sent a very different message. Age?
Not important as long as you’re willing to make a profound break with
the status quo.
Lastly, beyond casual mention of the genders of
Carmena and Colau, and the historical note of Colau’s demographic
singularity as the new mayor of Barcelona, the story is not of two women
in a still male-dominated political landscape. The narrative thread,
rather, is exactly what it should be. As Colau put it, “In Barcelona…a
bet was made for change.”
So what do these international events portend for
the 2016 general Presidential election? Beginning with the 2013
referendum in New York City that saw liberal Democrat Bill DeBlasio ride
a populist wave of Occupy Wall Street sentiment to the mayor’s
residence, the country’s urban left has been louder and more
demonstrative. One need only listen to Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s Roosevelt Island speech
to understand the powerful effect vocal liberal heroes such as
Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have had on moving the candidate’s
platform sharply to the left. As reported, self-reported liberals now outnumber conservatives.
It
may have taken a decade longer than we can rightfully spare with such a
lengthy and challenging list of obstacles standing between us and a
return to the nation’s middle class solvency, but the growing consensus
at home and overseas is clear. If ignorance is the greatest tool of
oppression, the right is running out of arrows. The 99 percent knows
it’s getting a raw deal, has in fact been receiving one for decades.
During each post- Bush 44 election cycle, repudiation of the
conservative economic “plan” grows stronger. If we move the conversation
away from the age, gender and race of the 2016 candidates (an
admittedly tall order), we are left with more than 80 percent of the
electorate residing in urban, liberal-skewing hubs waiting for their
Spanish moment.
Bernie Sanders Praises Pope Francis For His Powerful Message On Climate Change
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie
Sanders praised Pope Francis today for delivering a powerful message on
climate change. Sanders also reminded Republicans that they invited the
Pope to address them and urged climate change deniers to listen to what
Francis is saying.
In a statement Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) urged
Republicans to listen to the Pope on climate change, “Pope Francis’
powerful message on climate change should change the debate around the
world and become a catalyst for the bold actions needed to reverse
global warming. The pope helps us all see how those with the least among
us will fare the worst from the consequences of climate change. I very
much appreciate that the Republican leadership has invited the pope to
address Congress. I hope they listen to what he has to say. Denying
the science related to climate change is no longer acceptable.”
The Pope’s encyclical
embraced the science behind climate change, ” A very solid scientific
consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing
warming of the climatic system. In recent decades this warming has been
accompanied by a constant rise in the sea level and, it would appear, by
an increase of extreme weather events, even if a scientifically
determinable cause cannot be assigned to each particular phenomenon.
Humanity is called to recognise the need for changes of lifestyle,
production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least
the human causes which produce or aggravate it. It is true that there
are other factors (such as volcanic activity, variations in the Earth’s
orbit and axis, the solar cycle), yet a number of scientific studies
indicate that most global warming in recent decades is due to the great
concentration of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen
oxides and others) released mainly as a result of human activity.”
The fact that the Pope has embraced science has
placed him in a more forward thinking and realistic position than
science denying Republicans. It also demonstrates how far towards the
fringe one of the two political parties in the US has gone.
Francis took on climate change deniers, “Many of
those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem
mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their
symptoms, simply making efforts to reduce some of the negative impacts
of climate change.”
Pope Francis stated that those who hide their
climate change denial behind scripture are misinterpreting the Bible,
“We are not God. The earth was here before us and it has been given to
us. This allows us to respond to the charge that Judaeo-Christian
thinking, on the basis of the Genesis account which grants man
“dominion” over the earth (cf. Gen 1:28), has encouraged the unbridled
exploitation of nature by painting him as domineering and destructive by
nature. This is not a correct interpretation of the Bible as understood
by the Church. Although it is true that we Christians have at times
incorrectly interpreted the Scriptures, nowadays we must forcefully
reject the notion that our being created in God’s image and given
dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other
creatures. The biblical texts are to be read in their context, with an
appropriate hermeneutic, recognizing that they tell us to “till and
keep” the garden of the world (cf. Gen 2:15). “Tilling” refers to
cultivating, ploughing or working, while “keeping” means caring,
protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of
mutual responsibility between human beings and nature. Each community
can take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence,
but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its
fruitfulness for coming generations.”
The Pope has firmly aligned himself with those who
believe that climate change is real and that humanity must act. The Pope
echoed a message similar to what President Obama, Bernie Sanders, and
others have been saying in the United States. Republicans in this
country are holding back global progress on climate change to enrich
their corporate donors.
Francis’
encyclical makes it clear that climate change deniers can no longer
hide behind their warped version of The Bible. The most powerful
religious leader in the world has taken a stand, and he and Bernie
Sanders share the same position on protecting our planet.
At 10%, Uninsured Rate Hits New Low — And The Republican Cabal Is Keeping It From Single Digits

It’s even lower in states that have accepted federal funds to expand Medicaid; in those states the rate is at 7.5 percent.
But in states where legislatures and governors have refused to allow the Medicaid expansion called for in the ACA, the rate stands at 14.4 percent — nearly twice as high.
It was the Supreme Court who ruled states could opt out of the Medicaid expansion, but it was Republican politicians — almost exclusively — who stood in the way of states accepting hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal government to help some of the most vulnerable families, those just outside the poverty line, from getting coverage.
Obamacare has done a lot to bring that number down: keeping young people on their parents’ insurance until they’re 26, creating the exchanges, mandating coverage. But the Medicaid expansion has been essential to getting millions of people the insurance they desperately need, and the GOP is continuing to let petty politics stand in the way of helping the people they represent.
The number will likely drop into single digits soon, unless the Supreme Court rules against Obamacare in King v. Burwell. But it could get there much faster — instantaneously — if the states that haven’t accepted Medicaid expansion finally put it into place.

2015 Began with 332 Anti-Choice Provisions in Just Three Months
By the end of the first quarter of the year [April 1], legislators had introduced 791 provisions related to sexual and reproductive health and rights. Nearly 42% of these provisions (332 provisions) seek to restrict ac cess to abortion services; abortion restrictions have been introduced in 43 states…53 abortion restrictions had been approved by a legislative chamber, and nine had been enacted.
The Republican Party, regardless of what it says
about the economy – taxes, jobs, trade, manufacturing – is still focused
primarily on attacking women’s reproductive health. The Republican War on Women is far from a myth. It is alive and well. The numbers prove it, and it is only getting worse from year to year:

to talk about a war on Christianity – or even the criminalization of
Christianity – it is in fact people calling themselves Christians who are criminalizing women.
According to the yokels at the inappropriately-named Liberty Council, abortion is Baal worship, (so, apparently, is gayness) echoing Ben Carson’s claim last year that abortion is human sacrifice:

Increasingly, however, Baal the Cloud Rider, the
weather god, seems then to be the champion of women who are raped at the
behest of YHWH, his old Bronze Age persecutor. I am beginning to think
the only thing the Religious Right’s god loves more than money is rape.
Recently, Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser told wingnut critics
that Lindsey Graham’s 20-week abortion ban’s “rape exception is
abominable” – “regrettable,” “just wrong” and “completely intellectually
dishonest.”
She didn’t have anything bad to say about rape. Or
rapists. Just about letting raped women have access to abortions.
Needless to say, the Hobby Lobby ruling ensures they won’t necessarily
have access to contraception either.
Wisconsin’s “medical emergency” exemption is under similar attack from so-called pro-life groups. These pro-rape, anti-victim attitudes characterize the GOP today.
Guttmacher Institute tells us that this year started badly and we have already seen that it is not getting any better.
Sure, we have just seen the Supreme Court reject an appeal by North Carolina to restore an ultrasound law, but Scott Walker has unsavory plans for Wisconsin women – banning abortion after 20 weeks – and Kansas has proven that no matter how broke it is, it can always find money to ban abortions after only 14 weeks.
Women should flee Red States today to places where
they can breathe the free air. Such havens do still exist. Though that
won’t be true if the House has its way.
If states are attacking women’s reproductive
choices, the Republican-led House of Representatives, if it can’t create
a single job, is more than willing to ban abortion.
Just don’t expect any of those babies born to grow
up to jobs waiting for them if the GOP has anything to say about it.
Assuming they can get food and medical care to survive that long – or an
education to qualify them for the job.
The picture is not a pretty one as women in 43
states are potential victims of legislation introduced by their elected
officials, and that was just up to April 1. According to Guttmacher,
“More than half of U.S. women of reproductive age live in states that
are hostile or extremely hostile to abortion rights”:
Guttmacher points out that, “legislators in 16
states have introduced state versions of the Religious Freedom
Restoration Act (RFRA),” and while attention has focused on these laws
as an anti-gay measure, “the potential impact on contraceptive
coverage—and reproductive health more broadly—has received little, if
any, attention.”
Communism? Bah! The Red Menace has taken on new meaning for American women.
If you think women are being represented by their
legislators, you are wrong: the legislators seem to think they have been
elected to regulate, or even put a stop to, female sexuality.
It is a wonder at this point that any woman at all
votes Republican. Because for a woman to vote Republican is to enter
into sexual slavery. With this man:
And Cruz opposes abortion for victims of rape and incest. He calls contraception “abortion-inducing drugs.”
If nothing else moves you, think about it this way:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is America’s Favorite SC Justice, Clarence Thomas Is Least Favorite
A Public Policy Polling (PPP) national survey conducted from June 11th to June 14th 2015,
found that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is America’s favorite Supreme Court
Justice and Clarence Thomas is the nation’s least favorite justice. The
poll of 1,129 U.S. voters found that when asked who their favorite
justice was, 19 percent of voters chose Ruth Bader Ginsburg as their top
choice. Sonia Sotomayor and Clarence Thomas were tied for second with
11 percent of voters selecting each of them as their favorite justice.
When asked who their least favorite justice was,
Thomas was the top choice of 18 percent of voters, followed by Ginsburg
at 12 percent and Antonin Scalia at 10 percent. The fact that Thomas and
Ginsburg were among the top three most liked and most disliked justices
is evidence that they are the two justices most closely identified with
the polar extremes on the court, with Ginsburg representing the left
wing of the court, while Thomas is viewed as the farthest right-wing
justice on the court.
Overall, the public has a slightly negative view of the Supreme Court,
with 35 percent holding a favorable opinion of the court compared to 41
percent who have an unfavorable view of the court. Individual justices
fare a bit better. Six of the nine justices have a net favorable rating.
Justices Scalia, Thomas and Roberts are the three
justices who do not have positive favorable ratings. Justice John
Roberts has a negative 18 to 27 favorable to unfavorable ratio. Justice
Antonin Scalia is viewed favorably by 27 percent of American voters
compared to 29 percent who view him unfavorably. The polarizing Clarence
Thomas has a neutral 32 to 32 favorable versus unfavorable rating.
The popularity of each justice predictably
falls along partisan lines with Democrats holding favorable views of
Clinton and Obama appointees, while GOP voters prefer
Republican appointed justices. However, Independents, like Democrats,
also regard Ruth Bader Ginsburg as their favorite Supreme Court
Justice and Clarence Thomas as their least favorite justice. The view of
Independents suggests that middle of the road Americans recognize
that Clarence Thomas is the most ideologically extreme member of the
court, and that he is less trustworthy than the most liberal justice,
Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Democrats Bust Republicans For Refusing Release Full Transcript of Benghazi Deposition
Republicans keep saying their costly and far-fetched Benghazi
obsession is all about transparency. And yet, once again, they are
refusing to show the public the full transcript of…
On Tuesday, Chairman Trey Gowdy of the Select
Committee on Benghazi announced that Republicans would cherry pick
through emails provided by witness Sydney Blumenthal (to Secretary
Hillary Clinton, but this isn’t political y’all!) before making them public,
and of course yesterday’s testimony will be private. No doubt
misleading bits will be leaked to willing media outlets, but with no
context.
‘Cuz transparency.
On Wednesday, all five Democrats on the Select Committee on Benghazi sent a letter objecting:
Yesterday, you issued a press release
announcing that you intend to publicly release emails that Sidney
Blumenthal provided to the Select Committee relating to Libya. Your
press release stated:
“Sidney Blumenthal produced to the Committee
nearly 60 new emails regarding Libya and Benghazi,” Gowdy said. “These
emails were not previously produced to the Committee or released to the
public, and they will help inform tomorrow’s deposition. We are
prepared to release these emails, but where practicable our internal
processes include consultation with the Ranking Member before release.
If Ranking Member Cummings consents, we will add to the former
Secretary’s public email record and release these shortly. If not, we
will do so after the required five days has passed.”
However, you did not consult—or even
contact—Ranking Member Cummings, other Democratic Select Committee
Members, or anyone on our staffs before issuing your press release. Nor
did you contact the State Department to clarify why its production of
Benghazi-related emails might have differences from Mr. Blumenthal’s
production of Libya-related documents.
As you know, we have always supported
transparency as part of this investigation. We called on you to release
former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s emails after the Select
Committee obtained them in February, but you refused to do so. As you explained at the time:
“I am not going to make any emails public. We
have no idea whether this represents 10 percent of the document
production, 50 percent of the document production. We in the past have
not produced information selectively. In my judgment it runs counter to
a serious investigation to do so.”
You also highlighted
“the danger whenever you selectively release or leak information, is
you give a disproportionate amount of attention and importance to
whatever you’ve leaked.” Despite your previous statements on
this matter, your press release yesterday indicated that you now believe
it is appropriate to release selected emails from our investigation.
In response to your press release, Ranking Member Cummings agreed
to your proposal to release Mr. Blumenthal’s emails, provided that you
also release—at the same time—the full transcript of his day-long
deposition with the Select Committee. Rather than selectively leaking
only certain information about Mr. Blumenthal, the American people
deserve the benefit of Mr. Blumenthal’s responses to the hundreds of
questions that you and other Select Committee Members asked him,
including questions about these same emails. In response to the Ranking Member, you stated last night: “I need him to explain to me why this witness should be treated differently than any other witness.”
The fact of the matter is that you are the one treating Mr. Blumenthal differently. You are the one who ordered armed Marshals
to go to his home—without any debate or vote by the Committee—to serve a
subpoena compelling his testimony at yesterday’s deposition without
even contacting him first. You are the one who forced Mr. Blumenthal to
appear at a mandatory deposition—the only one the Select Committee has
held in the year since it was established—rather than a voluntary
transcribed interview like every individual before him. And you are the
one who is now proposing to release only Mr. Blumenthal’s emails when
you have not released emails from dozens of other individuals whose
documents the Select Committee has obtained.
Given your own words on this topic warning
against the selective release of information from the Committee’s
investigation, it has become impossible to understand your revolving
policy on when the Select Committee will release information and when it
will not. This type of incoherent policy inevitably leads to
criticisms that the investigation is motivated by a partisan political
attack against former Secretary Clinton rather than a neutral effort to
obtain the facts.
Obviously, the full transcript of Mr.
Blumenthal’s deposition will provide important background and context to
his emails. Otherwise, there would have been no reason to hold the
deposition in the first place. We would be happy to have our staffs
work together to review both the emails and the deposition transcript to
identify any content that we all agree should be redacted before public
release. In fact, we understand that you have already agreed to such a
practice with Mr. Blumenthal’s attorney regarding his emails, so the
same process could easily be used to review his deposition transcript.
If Republicans truly believe in transparency, then they should have no
objection to this course of action.

Insert laughter here, because Democrats keep asking
for Republicans to be transparent in their alleged “transparency”
efforts, but Republicans like to keep their Benghazi investigations
under deep cover. They can’t afford to let the public see just how empty
is their Benghazi conspiracy tank.
Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds in its
desperation to find something to pin on the very popular former
Secretary Clinton, who beats all of their 2016 candidates with her hands
tied behind her back and while sleeping.
Remember when Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) reminded
Republicans that if they had any questions about fault regarding
Benghazi, they should buy themselves a mirror?
Oh yes. And then came the super secret meetings and
testimony by experts who actually know stuff, the full context of which
Republicans thought the public shouldn’t see. Republican Darrell Issa (R-CA) refused to let the co-chairs
of the Benghazi Review give their testimony in public, as they
requested, and tried to force Ambassador Thomas Pickering to testify
when the cameras were done rolling.
Republicans told the press that the co-chairs wouldn’t testify but the co-chairs wrote to Issa: “Recently,
you seem to have changed your position on our appearance, apparently
asking for a transcribed interview behind closed doors. In our view,
requiring such a closed-door proceeding before we testify publicly is an
inappropriate precondition.”
Democrats are at the eye-rolling stage with
Republicans. Republicans refuse to release Secretary Clinton’s emails or
let her testify immediately. And now they’re arguing the other side.
Sure the public is paying for this Republican 2016
political ad witch hunt, but Republicans don’t feel the public has a
right to know what is actually discovered with their tax money.
Republicans

The national survey of 1,129 registered voters, including 492 probable Republican primary voters, and 471 probable Democratic primary voters, found Clinton dominating the Democratic field, and leading all Republicans in general election head to head contests.
The PPP national survey found Clinton still holds a
commanding 65 percent to 9 percent lead over Vermont Senator Bernie
Sanders in the Democratic primary field. Sanders has made inroads in recent polls in New Hampshire,
but Clinton is still dominating the national race. She polls well with
every significant Democratic constituency, but she is running especially
strong with African-American voters. 83 percent of black voters favor
Clinton over any of her Democratic opponents.
The PPP poll
also finds that Clinton is currently the strongest Democratic general
election candidate. She holds a modest lead over every Republican
presidential hopeful. Florida Senator Marco Rubio comes closest to
Clinton, trailing just 46-43 percent. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker,
who barely leads the GOP field, trails Clinton by a similar 46-42
margin. Clinton also leads both Jeb Bush and Chris Christie 45-41. Her
lead over the remaining GOP candidates — Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina,
Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul –ranges from between 5 and 7 percentage points.
When matched up against GOP front-runner Scott
Walker, Clinton fares 12 to 16 percentage points better than any of her
Democratic rivals. Clinton’s 4 point lead over Walker contrasts with Sanders, O’Malley, Webb, and Chafee all trailing Walker by 8 to 12 percentage points.
With
the presidential election still well over a year away, the dynamics of
the race could change dramatically between now and November 2016.
However, Hillary Clinton’s advantage has proven resilient over months of
polling. There is no question that she has a strong base of support
nationally, which makes her a formidable candidate in both the
Democratic primary and the general election field. She remains the odds
on favorite to become the 45th President of the United States.

Carolina and Nevada were moved to larger venues.

Responding to swelling interest, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign moved town meetings set for this weekend to much bigger spaces in Las Vegas and Charleston, South Carolina. The campaign also made contingency plans to accommodate the thousands of people who have indicated they plan to see Sanders on Saturday in Denver.“The more people get to know about Bernie and what he stands for the more they want to be part of his political revolution,” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager. “I think there’s just a hunger out in the country for someone to speak to the issues that really affect the lives of middle income and working families,” he added.The events are free and open to the public, which makes turnout projections difficult to calculate precisely, but Weaver said the campaign changed the event sites in Nevada and South Carolina based on indications that much bigger crowds of people plan to attend than were initially anticipated.

unmatched at this time. It is unknown whether this enthusiasm will

The momentum behind the Bernie Sanders campaign for
president is spreading from New Hampshire to South Carolina as interest
was so high in Sanders’ message that the campaign was forced to move his
upcoming speech in Charleston to a larger venue.
Over the weekend, the state chapter of the AFL-CIO labor union group jumped the gun and effectively backed his candidacy before being forced to walk its message back. Last night, on the eve of Clinton’s arrival, Sanders’ campaign said it had to change the venue for his upcoming swing through Charleston due to overwhelming local interest. That announcement — which pointedly noted that the new venue is a high school gym located on President Street — came just hours before Clinton was set to unveil a new plan to combat youth unemployment through tax credits for businesses who hire apprentices.The former secretary of state continues to maintain a commanding lead over the Vermont senator in most national and early state polling — including in South Carolina, where Sanders has no permanent staff. But the liberal challenger has been creeping toward her in New Hampshire polls and the energy and overflow crowds of his recent early state events are attracting notice.

Support for their candidate is much higher than expected, so they have

Sanders is real. There is an energy among Sanders supporters is very

hoped it would.
There is a pent-up desire for an authentic
grassroots movement in response to the Great Recession. The desire to
reclaim a country that is under threat from corporations and
billionaires with a political agenda is palpable. Bernie Sanders spent
parts of the last few years going to states like South Carolina and
speaking to Democrats and progressives who are too often neglected and
lumped in with their Republican rulers. Sen. Sanders has been working
the grassroots of America’s discontent for a long time, and his efforts
are paying off.
The Sanders movement isn’t so much about rejecting
Hillary Clinton as it is a response to income inequality, real
unemployment, Wall Street, Citizens United and political influence of a
handful of conservative billionaires. The basic issues that Sanders
talks about on the campaign trail resonate with voters in every state
red or blue across this country.
Bernie
Sanders is saying out loud what millions of Americans have been waiting
years to hear. It’s no surprise that so many people would be interested
in his message, but this is just the beginning. The Sanders campaign
needs to start thinking about reserving many more bigger venues because
the momentum looks to be just getting started.

Key to conservative’s victory is to do our
own vetting of each candidate, focus on their ability to unleash
America’s entrepreneurial spirit and dramatically shrink government in
order to prioritize our nation’s security. That means we ignore the
media’s participation in the liberals’ Pantsuit Politics of Personal
Destruction. THEN, on an even playing field, in 2016 we charge forward
after the radical left hears America shout, “You’re fired!”
