Cruz: If Elected, I Would Jail ‘Communist’ Obama & Murder Iran’s Supreme Leader

Cruz (R-TX) has officially declared himself to be a threat to our national security and to the pursuit of peace across the world. The firebrand pretender candidate and teabagger darling is known for saying disturbingly ignorant things, but this time he has barreled right over the line of decency and reason. This morning, with the taste of Boehner’s metaphorical blood still fresh in his mouth, jackal Cruz addressed the Value Voters Summit, energized by his victory over the last semblance of moderation that the House still had.
He decided to open by making a joke about President Obama, who is apparently “the world’s most powerful communist”, and then swung right into calling for the President’s arrest: “If they can project a rainbow on the White House, maybe they can put bars on the windows!” His speech went downhill from there.
In a breathtaking show of dangerous extremism and astounding disrespect for the our nation, our president, and the international community, Cruz announced that on his first day as President, he would “rip to shreds” the Iranian nuclear peace deal and threatened to kill Iran’s leaders. “If the ayatollah [Sayyid Ali Khamenei] doesn’t understand that, we may have to help introduce him to the 72 virgins” (Referring to the misconception that virgins await Islamic martyrs in heaven). The enormity of those statement is simply astounding and enormously offensive. This man, who is apparently running to be the leader of the free world, finds it acceptable to make casual death threats toward world leaders and speaks frivolously about starting major international wars.
What is perhaps even more terrifying is the response from the crowd, which was several standing ovations. There is quite possibly nobody more unqualified to be in government than Cruz. While he dances on the grave of Boehner and ties on his legislative kamikaze bandanna, it is important for us to take stock of just what an ambitious lunatic he really is. This is no way for an elected official to behave, no matter how crude and malleable your support base is. Cruz has proven he has no intention of governing as a Senator; he’s given no indication that he would do any better as President. Statements like these have absolutely no place in the realm of rational and reasonable politics, and Cruz does not deserve a place in our national discourse.

Candidate Trump - Good For America

by John DeProspo
ID-10063093
Muslim terrorists have long pushed the narrative that they are at war with the west in a “clash of civilizations.” It’s the death match they so long for between Islam and the infidels of western society. For most of post 9-11 America, this notion has been rejected by a majority of Americans. But, as we have seen since the Paris attacks, this idea of a “clash of civilizations” is gaining wide acceptance among a fearful American populace. A large segment of Americans now believe all Muslims are terrorists, or all terrorists are Muslim, and that we are indeed at war with the Muslim faith.
While this narrative is patently false, it is being shamefully hyped by many of the Republican pretender candidates, most notably Donald Trump. The frontrunner for the Republican nomination has irresponsibly called for warrant-less searches of mosques and tracking Muslim Americans in a database or giving them “a special form of identification that noted their religion.”
Once again, as Trump’s rhetoric has become more repulsive, he has seen a spike in his poll numbers. In a recent NBC/SurveyMonkey online poll following the Paris attacks, Trump’s support is at 28%, Carson 18% (down eight points from the previous survey), Cruz 18%, Rubio 11% and Bush at 4%.
What Trump’s ascendancy as the leading Republican candidate has done is put our country in a clash of its own; a clash of identity and direction; a fight for the soul of the country. And this is a good thing!
We, as Americans, need this fight. Whether it’s Trump or one of the other Republican fear-mongers, the results of the upcoming presidential election will show the country who we are as a nation and inform the world if we are the America they have long respected and admired.
While the Republican establishment will do all it can to derail a Trump nomination, it may be too late. Having Trump as the Republican standard bearer would be the best thing for our country. It could very well signal the death of the Republican cabal or the start of a dark future for the land of the free.
Every election is billed as the most important election we will ever face. This time around, it may actually be that.

Against NRA Opposition Senator Feinstein Pushes To End Gun Sales To Suspected Terrorists

Senator Feinstein is leading an effort to bar gun sales to people on the Terrorist Watchlist, but the NRA is fighting her efforts.…
feinstein state of the union
California Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) is renewing efforts to prohibit people on the FBI’s Terrorist Watchlist from purchasing handguns and military-style rifles. Congressional Republicans have consistently opposed legislation designed to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns. However, with wingnut lawmakers still recoiling in fear from the Paris attacks, some Republican members of congress might reconsider their position that arming suspected terrorists is an acceptable policy.
Under current federal law, affiliation with a known terrorist organization doesn’t bar an individual from purchasing or possessing firearms or explosives. While restricting rights based on suspicion of terrorist activity is a delicate matter, Feinstein made her point rather bluntly, by stating:
I think this is a no-brainer. If you’re too dangerous to board a plane, you’re too dangerous to buy a gun.
Members on the Terrorist Watchlist are banned from boarding commercial flights, but between 2004 and 2014 individuals on the list made at least 2,043 legal gun purchases in the United States.
Democrats and a few Republicans, including New York Rep. Peter King and former president George W. Bush tried to pass legislation closing off suspected terrorists’ legal access to guns, but they were blocked by NRA-friendly congressional Republicans at every turn.
Predictably, the NRA has voiced their opposition to Feinstein’s proposal. NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker stated:
It is appalling that anti-gun politicians are exploiting the Paris terrorist attacks to push their gun-control agenda and distract from President Obama’s failed foreign policy.
In the wake of 129 people getting murdered by terrorists, the idea of making it more difficult for suspected terrorists to arm themselves probably won’t seem “appalling” to most Americans.
What may come across as appalling is the NRA’s dogmatic insistence that guns continue to be made readily available to almost anyone who wants to have one. The NRA and their Republican stooges in congress are so indoctrinated into the gun cult, that they won’t even approve of legislation designed to keep guns out of the the hands of suspected terrorists.

Should Terrorist Watchlist Members Be Able To Buy Guns?

ISIL Says Anonymous Are Idiots But Anonymous Shows Who the Real Idiots Are

Anonymous-op-paris
Back in January, in the wake of the attacks on Charlie Hebdo, the Anonymous collective declared war on the Islamic State with #OpParis (Operation Paris).
Recently, they sort of declared war again, releasing a video Monday in response to the latest Paris terrorist attacks. TheHackerNews.com called it a declaration of “total war.” Anonymous told the world that they were about to “launch the biggest operation ever,” and in the video, warned the Islamic State to “expect massive cyber-attacks.”
“Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down. You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go.”
In response Monday, the Islamic State released a statement of its own, resorting to the always effective tactic of name-calling:
“The #Anonymous hackers threatened in a new video release that they will carry out a major hack operation on the Islamic state (idiots).”

Oh dear. I’m sure that hurt. It was, in fact, the cause of great hilarity.
This video was sent to News2Share by Anonymous ...
We can agree or not agree that our leaders have failed us. What is certainly correct is that governments by their very nature have limited options. Political will is the fuel that drives military operations. Before both world wars, the United States lacked the political will to get involved until certain conditions were met.
Al Qaeda discovered that America does have the political will to do what must be done in response to terrorist attacks, as the shrub junta chased them running with their tails between their legs from Afghanistan in 2001. The Invasion of Iraq in 2003 was far less successful. Nonetheless, the United States sustained a decade-long effort to defeat its enemies in the Middle East, including enemies it had created in the process.
That will, as a result of the cost of that long war, has eroded America’s ability to respond as it once might have. President Obama is constrained by this reality. Anonymous is not.
While Russians and Americans and Iraqis and Kurds and other local groups pound the Islamic State both on the ground and from the air (something of which Anonymous does not approve), Anonymous has gone for their soft underbelly in an effective cyberwar.
ISIL called Anonymous “idiots” but it is Anonymous, by shutting down over 5,500 Twitter accounts belonging to Islamic State members in the first 24 hours, Anonymous showed who the true idiots are. The Islamic State had sent advice to its members on how to avoid being hacked, but this was just more cause for humor among the hacktivist group:
So ineffective were these measures that on Wednesday, Anonymous announced in another video that the count was now at 20,000 accounts. Their masked spokesman announced “this is only the beginning” and that there is no longer “any safe place online”:
Hello citizens of the world, we are anonymous.
It is time to realize social media is a solid platform for ISIS’s communication as well as neutering there ideas of terror amoung youth, but at the same time social media has proven that it is an advanced weapon. We must all work together and use social media to eliminate the accounts belonging to terrorists. More than 20,000 Twitter Accounts belonging to ISIS were just taken down by Anonymous. You can find a list of all the Twitter Accounts in the description. This is only the beginning.
ISIS; we will hunt you, Take down your sites, Accounts, Emails, and expose you…From now on, no safe place for you online…You will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure.
They closed with their signature warning:
We are anonymous.
We are legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
ISIS…it is too late to Expect Us.
If the Islamic State wanted attention, they have gotten it. It seems very unlikely they will enjoy the result.

Rick Perry Loses, Ordered To Stand Trial For Felony Abuse Of Power

From the Archives:
 by Ann Werner
Rick Perry
Things are not looking so good for presidential hopeful, former Texas Governor Rick Perry.
U.S. News and World Report is reporting that the 3rd Court of Appeals today threw out one of the charges against him but ruled he still has to answer for the abuse-of-power accusations against him.
A grand jury indicted Perry in 2014 for using his executive power to try to force Travis County’s Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry threatened to veto $7.5 million (2 years) in state funding to Lehmberg’s Public Integrity unit after she’d pled guilty to drunk driving and served 45 days for the offense. A state funded watchdog, the Public Integrity Unit investigates charges of public corruption. When Perry called to demand she resign, she refused; he then vetoed funding for the agency. The grand jury issued two indictments: abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. A guilty sentence on both counts could have put Perry in the slammer for 109 years.
The 3rd Court rejected the coercion of a public servant count on the grounds that it violated the First Amendment but upheld the first count, saying Perry’s actions were unconstitutional. That charge is a first-degree felony and carries a maximum sentence of 99 years.
His attorney, Tony Buzbee, made this statement at a news conference in Houston: “One down, one to go. The court today threw out what we consider to be the greater of the two charges.” According to Buzbee, the abuse of power charge is “hanging by a thread.”
Seeing that the coercion of a public servant charge carried only a 10-year maximum sentence and the abuse of power carries a considerably longer sentence, one has to wonder what Buzbee is talking about and if he even knows what he’s doing.
Director Craig McDonald of the left leaning Texans for Public Justice  was quick to point out that the judges who handed down today’s ruling are Republican. He stated they could have thrown out the entire case but instead, their decision “leaves a criminal indictment hanging over Perry’s head.”
The Perry campaign had no comment other than Buzbee’s statement.

Bernie Sanders Hammers Wall Street And The Rigged Economy With Two New Tough Ads

bernie sanders new ads
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is hitting Wall Street with a double barrel of truth via two new political ads that will begin running in New Hampshire and Iowa.
The ad “Works For Us All:”
In the ad, Sen. Sanders said, “If you’re doing everything right but find it harder and harder to get by, you’re not alone. While our people work longer hours for lower wages, almost all new income goes to the top 1 percent. My plan: Make Wall Street banks and the ultra-rich pay their fair share of taxes. Provide living wages for working people. Ensure equal pay for women. Together, we can make a political revolution and create an economy and democracy that works for all.”
The second ad is titled “This Is How It Works:”
Sanders said, “The truth is, you can’t change a corrupt system by taking its money. It’s called a rigged economy, and this is how it works. Most new wealth flows to the top 1 percent. It’s a system held in place by corrupt politics where Wall Street banks and billionaires buy elections. My campaign is powered by over a million small contributions from people like you who want to fight back.”
Sen. Sanders is putting the money raised by his 800,000 small donors to work spreading the message that America’s corrupt campaign finance system is the mechanism that is allowing income inequality to grow. If elected officials are accountable to their big donors instead of voters, the government stops belonging to the people.
The Bernie Sanders presidential campaign is dangerous to Wall Street and the billionaires because they aren’t owned by big money donors. Sanders doesn’t belong to the billionaires, which means that he is free to speak the truth. The truth is that our current political system is being corrupted by outside money and the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.
These ads can inform the public and for that reason Wall Street and billionaire oligarchs should be very afraid.

Proof Of Republican Failure: 9 of 12 States With Highest Unemployment Are Misled By Republicans

red state unemployment
New state unemployment statistics revealed that the fastest way to sink an economy is to vote for Republican candidates.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “North Dakota had the lowest jobless rate in October, 2.8 percent, followed by Nebraska, 2.9 percent. West Virginia had the highest rate, 6.9 percent. In total, 20 states had unemployment rates significantly lower than the U.S. figure of 5.0 percent, 12 states and the District of Columbia had measurably higher rates and 18 states had rates that were not appreciably different from that of the nation.”
Here are the 12 states with a higher than the national average unemployment rate of 5.0%:
1). West Virginia (D) (6.9%)
2). Alaska (R) (6.4%)

3). Arizona (R) (6.1%)
4). Louisiana (R) (6.2%)
5). Nevada (R) (6.6%)
6). Alabama (R) (5.9%)
7). Georgia (R) (5.7%)
8). New Mexico (R) (6.8%)
9). Mississippi (R) (5.9%)
10). North Carolina (R) (5.7%)
11). Oregon (D) (6.0%)
12). California (D) (5.8%)
States with Republican governors tend to lag behind the national economy. The fastest way for voters to kill economic growth is to vote a Republican into office. The one thing that the Republican states on the list all have in common is that they have implemented the failed wingnut economic policy of tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.
To the surprise of no one, cutting taxes for those at the top in these states has not resulted in the magic job creator fairy raining jobs down from the skies on to the hard working people below. Republican economic policies do not create jobs.
The country is watching the Republican pretender candidates promise to use the same policies that are failing at the state level if they get into the White House. The struggles of red states to perform at the level that President Obama has national economy humming at should be a red flag for voters.
President Obama has righted the economic ship, and the fastest way to sink the boat would be to let Republicans steer the country straight into the trickle down iceberg.

Republicans Are So Detached From Reality, They Think Unemployment Has Risen Under Obama

The unemployment rate has not only dropped since Obama took office, it has dropped dramatically.…
Obamas jobs bill
A Bloomberg Poll released on November 19th found that a majority of Republican voters believe the unemployment has risen during Barack Obama’s presidency. According to the poll, 53 percent of Republican voters erroneously think the unemployment rate is higher now than when Barack Obama was first inaugurated in January of 2009. Only 38 percent of Republican voters correctly understood that the unemployment has dropped during Obama’s presidency.
The unemployment rate has not only dropped since Obama took office, it has dropped dramatically. When Barack Obama took the oath of office in January 2009, the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent. It rose to 10.0 percent by October of that year, as the full impact of the 2008 economic crisis took hold and caused massive job losses in the U.S. economy.
However, since October of 2009, the unemployment rate has dropped sharply, and by October 2015 it had fallen to 5.0 percent. After the Bush economy fell flat on its face, Barack Obama has put Americans back to work again, and the nation has enjoyed a modest recovery.
Republican voters however, live in an alternate reality. They are so resistant to the idea that America isn’t on the road to ruin, that they refuse to see any good news so long as Barack Obama remains in the White House. Their frustration with the current president however is rooted in ideology not in genuine suffering. Republicans can believe what they want to believe, but they should never confuse their beliefs with the truth.
With the wingnut base so detached from reality, it is little wonder that they have rallied behind Trump’s “make America great again” slogan. Republican voters have lost sight that Barack Obama is already making America great again, rebuilding it from the economic destruction wrought by the policies of the shrub.
The wingnuts refuse to accept reality. They want to believe Barack Obama is a terrible president who has caused Americans untold suffering. They want to believe that unemployment has risen with Obama at the helm. However, this nightmare is a figment of Republican voters’ collective imaginations. The unemployment rate has dropped under Obama’s leadership, and even if Republicans can’t acknowledge that reality, the rest of us know its the truth.

Republicans Reeling As ObamaCare Opposition Is Crumbling In Red States

Obama-Smile-full-side-feat
The red states are the backbone of the Republican cabal, but growing evidence suggests that opposition to ObamaCare expansion is falling apart in the wingnut stronghold.
The Hill reported:
Vitter (R-La.) has expressed openness to Medicaid expansion if he was elected governor of Louisiana on Saturday, and his Democratic opponent, John Bel Edwards, has been an enthusiastic supporter of expansion as well.
More recently, there was surprising news out of Alabama, as a commission appointed by Republican governor Robert Bentley recommended expansion. Bentley said earlier this month that he is “looking” at the possibility of broadening Medicaid.
“What is going to happen is that support for Medicaid expansion will continue to build,” Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell told Atlanta Magazine in an article published Monday. “You hear the Alabama governor. You’ve heard conversations in Louisiana.”

Supporters of Medicaid expansion hope that if they can get a foothold in the South, other states will follow.
Republicans run on repealing the ACA, when behind closed doors, they are closely examining ways to expand Medicaid. There are two dynamics driving the change. The clock is ticking towards the 2016 deadline for the federal government to foot the entire bill for Medicaid expansion, and the program has not caused the apocalypse that Republicans predicted.
Even the math-challenged Deep South Republicans understand that they are giving up hundreds of millions of federal dollars for an ideological position on healthcare reform has lost. Signs are growing within all levels of the Republican Party that there are elements of the ACA that have popular support. The idea that the republican cabal will ever throw away the entire Affordable Care Act is more election year posturing than reality.
Republicans are trying to save face by doing it “their way,” but President Obama has won. Time and persistence are wearing down the last bastion of ACA opposition.

Koch Spy Agency Targeting Progressives Led by Notorious Republican Voter Fraud Huckster

Koch’s Justice Reform Proposal Restricts Prosecution For Environmental Violations

The Kochs want to pollute with impunity by simply claiming they were unaware that it was a federal violation to poison the air and water…
Corporate crime
Equality has never really caught on in America regardless the concept is ensconced in the nation’s Declaration of Independence and Constitution. One area that has come under increasing scrutiny over the past couple of years is the inordinate number of poor and people of color who are incarcerated at an incredibly higher rate than the rest of the population. In part, it is due to America’s inherent racism, and in part because there is big money and serious profit-taking in the nation’s penal system.
Now though, an unlikely alliance between the Koch brothers, the White House, Democrats, and the Kochs’ agitator network; the latter who have portrayed themselves as altruistic benefactors of the imprisoned by promoting major criminal justice reform “to unshackle millions of poor and people of color from a predatory legal system.” However, like everything connected with the Kochs, there is an ulterior motive behind their activism driven by a new and effective means of skirting environmental regulations with impunity under the guise of “criminal justice system reform.”
Neither the Koch brothers, ALEC, nor House Republicans are concerned about reforming the criminal justice system to relieve people of color or the poor from judicial inequality. They want the system reformed for corporations, the wealthy, and the Koch brothers. Like every piece of legislation, or “reform package” involving Koch-Republicans, there are hidden provisions to ensure that the Kochs and corporations get precisely what they demand; impossible “legal hurdles” to prevent federal prosecutors from pursuing white-collar criminals.
Apparently the Kochs have concluded that since they have been unsuccessful thus far in their significant attempts to eliminate federal regulations and laws, especially environmental regulations, they tasked “their Republican Congress” with passing legislation to neuter the judicial system’s ability to prosecute violators.
There is nothing whatsoever altruistic about the Koch’s alleged pursuit of fairness or justice in promoting criminal justice reform. It is just a “get out of jail free” card courtesy of Republicans and no small number of naïve Democrats motivated out of compassion to put a stop to judicial inequality. Time will tell if Democrats or the President can eliminate the Koch-corporate amendments hampering prosecution for serious crimes against the American people.
A House Judiciary Committee’s early draft of one proposed package of reforms substantially raises the legal threshold for prosecutors to prove a person committed a white-collar offense. The House bill will abandon a very basic precept in American law that no person can claim they did not know, or understand, that what they were doing was illegal or dangerous. If the legislation is enacted, it will require that the government “proves that the defendant knew, or had reason to believe, the conduct was unlawful;” in other words, prosecutors would be required to prove they could read a defendant’s mind at the time of their crime.
According to the president of Public Citizen, Robert Weissman:
The House language violates the basic precept that ‘ignorance of the law’ is no defense. There is absolutely no reason for the otherwise laudable criminal justice reform bill to contain any measure to weaken already feeble standards for corporate criminal prosecution.”
Of course there is no reason in a democracy to create a different set of legal standards for the rich and corporations than the rest of the population, but America is hardly an equitable society. But it is noteworthy that the Kochs directed Republicans to slip “fine print” protecting corporations into judicial reform heavily touted to protect the poor and people of color.
Some Americans may be aware that the Koch’s state-level legislative arm, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has spent no small amount of Koch, NRA, and Chamber of Commerce funds working on “criminal justice reform” in the states, but this latest push at the federal level is aimed directly at environmental regulations. In fact, nearly all Koch-funded, anti-regulation belief tanks have been extremely active issuing documentation and papers demanding that since Republicans control Congress and cannot abolish regulations outright, the next best thing is enacting more robust requirements to even prosecute violations, much less get a white-collar (corporate) conviction.
A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice, Peter Carr, said if the Koch criminal justice reform ever becomes law that it will seriously undermine the DOJ’s ability to prosecute white-collar crime. Mr. Carr said,
It would create confusion and needless litigation, and significantly weaken countless federal statutes; especially those that play an important role in protecting the public welfare… protecting consumers from unsafe food and medicine;” it would also be the next best thing to eradicating federal regulations. It is precisely what the Heritage Foundation and Charles Koch Institute have clamored for and Congress is seriously on pace to give the Kochs what they expect for their money; results.
The Koch brothers and their conservative allies claim that federal prosecutors have far too much power and too readily abuse it; it is what normal people regard as doing their jobs. This has nothing to do with a racial justice agenda or anything close to civil rights activists focused on police and prosecutorial abuses of the criminal justice system; this is entirely about the Koch-corporate community focusing on neutering government regulations.
Heritage Foundation’s legal studies director, John Malcolm, wrote that
If somebody or some entity unwittingly does something that results in harm to the environment or public, there is no reason why it cannot be dealt with through the administrative or civil justice systems. This would avoid saddling blameless individuals and entities with a criminal conviction.”
It would also allow the Kochs to pollute, dump toxic chemicals, and destroy air and water with relative impunity by simply claiming they were unaware that it was a federal violation to poison the air and water.
Malcolm even devised a paper for Congress to base its “regulatory reform laws” on and laid out some excuses corporations can use to get out of jail free. Specifically, Malcolm’s provides a range of varying standards of proof federal prosecutors will be bound by law to get a conviction. At worst, a perpetrator can be prosecuted if they are accused of “negligence, recklessly, knowingly, intentionally, and willfully violate regulations or the law;” or they can plead that they just did not think it was illegal to dump toxic waste and poison into the air and water and force the Department of Justice to prove they were not ignorant of the law. It is something a person of color caught with a reefer in their pocket could never get away with. Obviously, the only point of the “reformation” is to protect corporations and give them free rein to violate federal regulations by making it impossible to prosecute them.
The principle behind criminal justice reform is admirable, and changing the system to treat the poor and people of color equitably is desperately needed. It is likely that the majority of Democrats, including President Obama, will push hard to see some kind of reform package passed sooner than later. However, no American should delude themselves for one second that the Kochs, who are praising themselves for acting on behalf of the poor or minorities, are spending one cent of their substantial fortune for any other reason than to protect themselves from prosecution for violating environmental regulations they have failed to eradicate.

Bernie Sanders Hits A Home Run With Democratic Socialism Speech That Could Change America

Bernie Sanders Democratic Socialism Speech Georgetown University
Bernie Sanders delivered one of the great political speeches of the year with an address that if listened to and heeded has the power to change America.
Sen. Sanders said:
People are not truly free when they are unable to feed their family. People are not truly free when they are unable to retire with dignity. People are not truly free when they are unemployed or underpaid or when they are exhausted by working long hours. People are not truly free when they have no health care.
So let me define for you, simply and straightforwardly, what democratic socialism means to me. It builds on what Franklin Delano Roosevelt said when he fought for guaranteed economic rights for all Americans. And it builds on what Martin Luther King, Jr. said in 1968 when he stated that; “This country has socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the poor.” It builds on the success of many other countries around the world that have done a far better job than we have in protecting the needs of their working families, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor.
Democratic socialism means that we must create an economy that works for all, not just the very wealthy.

Democratic socialism means that we must reform a political system in America today which is not only grossly unfair but, in many respects, corrupt.
It is a system, for example, which during the 1990s allowed Wall Street to spend $5 billion in lobbying and campaign contributions to get deregulated. Then, ten years later, after the greed, recklessness, and illegal behavior of Wall Street led to their collapse, it is a system which provided trillions in government aid to bail them out. Wall Street used their wealth and power to get Congress to do their bidding for deregulation and then, when their greed caused their collapse, they used their wealth and power to get Congress to bail them out. Quite a system!
And, then, to add insult to injury, we were told that not only were the banks too big to fail, the bankers were too big to jail. Kids who get caught possessing marijuana get police records. Wall Street CEOs who help destroy the economy get raises in their salaries. This is what Martin Luther King, Jr. meant by socialism for the rich and rugged individualism for everyone else.
In my view, it’s time we had democratic socialism for working families, not just Wall Street, billionaires and large corporations. It means that we should not be providing welfare for corporations, huge tax breaks for the very rich, or trade policies which boost corporate profits as workers lose their jobs. It means that we create a government that works for works for all of us, not just powerful special interests. It means that economic rights must be an essential part of what America stands for.
The speech that Sen. Sanders delivered was a cultural landmark. Before the Great Recession, no one could have imagined a major party presidential candidate delivering an address that exposed the inequalities in our economic system.
Sanders explained why he is running for president, “I’m not running for president because it’s my turn, but because it’s the turn of all of us to live in a nation of hope and opportunity not for some, not for the few, but for all.”
Bernie Sanders isn’t a communist or a socialist. Sen. Sanders is a throwback to the days of true liberalism. It wasn’t a coincidence that Sanders frequently referred to the most successful Democratic president of all time in his speech.
Sanders said, “I don’t believe government should own the means of production, but I do believe that the middle class and the working families who produce the wealth of America deserve a fair deal.”
Sanders echoed the view of governmental power that echoed FDR. Roosevelt used his power to balance the scales after a decades of a Republican federal government that had become too pro-business and corporation.
Sen. Sanders didn’t offer a defense of democratic socialism. He went on offense with an argument that explained why our system is out of whack. The current American system benefits the few at the expense of the many. Sanders made a compelling argument that it is time to give the country back to the majority and that the power of government should be used to benefit all Americans, not just the wealthy and corporations.
Bernie Sanders delivered a speech that showed that liberalism is alive and well. Republicans are trying to use democratic socialism as a slur, but they are doing so out of fear.
The United States is moving left. The country is becoming more diverse, and Republicans are being left behind. The address by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was a landmark moment that revealed how far the left we have moved. Sanders is a serious candidate for the Democratic nomination, and he delivered a speech that could inspire a movement that will change America.
Sen. Sanders hit a home run with an address that could mark the moment when ordinary Americans mobilized to take their country back from the corporations and billionaires.
