While you can toke ‘em if you got ‘em if
you’re over the age of twenty-one, you have to do so in private.
Consumers are permitted to partake of the weed in their own homes and
grow up to six plants. They can also transport it and give it away — so
be nice to your neighbors. And while being in possession of small
amounts of marijuana is legal, you could be fined $100 if you decide to
celebrate in public.
Someone who is sure to be marking the
occasion is Charlo Greene. Greene made headlines last year when she quit
her job as as a KTVA reporter on air with the words “f–k it, I quit.”
She revealed on air that she was the owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club
and was leaving to concentrate her energies on getting marijuana
legalized in Alaska.
Greene later posted a video elaborating
on her reason for quitting, saying she was fed up with the arrests and
injustice that smoking marijuana has caused for people. “Why are
Americans arrested every 37 seconds, Alaskans every 4.3 hours?” she
asked. “Why should an aspiring someone lose their ability to earn a
higher education to become that someone they were meant to be?”
Greene is expected to be opening the
state’s first medical marijuana dispensary on Tuesday, though retail
sales aren’t set to begin until May 2016. In order to comply with the
current laws, Greene says “As long as we aren’t selling, we aren’t
violating,” according to KTVA. Patients will be required to have a
medical marijuana card and give cash donations.
Marijuana is already legal in Colorado
and Washington state, and more states will be following, so you may want
to be prepared and brush up on your green thumb skills soon.
