Consumer watchdog agency gets $14 million in refunds from the banksters

The Consumer Financial Protect Bureau caught another bank cheating its customers and again has secured millions in refunds to said customers. This time it's Citizens Bank skimming off the top of customers' deposits.Citizens Bank agreed to refund at least $14 million and pay $20.5 million in fines for shortchanging customers who made mistakes on their deposit slips, federal regulators said Wednesday.
The bank engaged in “shoddy practices that deprived consumers of money that was rightfully theirs,” said Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
From January 2008 to September 2012, Citizens Bank investigated and fixed errors only if the discrepancy was more than $50. From October 2012 to November 2013, the bank lowered that threshold to $25.
The failure to fix errors violated the bank’s own promise in account disclosures to verify deposits, Cordray said.
About $11 million will be refunded to individual account holders, and $3 million to business accounts. In total, more than 475,000 accounts were due refunds not because the bank couldn't do the math to correct deposit errors, but because it refused to if it could make some money off of them. Add another $14 million to the $10.8 billion the agency has secured in its short lifespan for consumers cheated by the financial industry.
That will only make all the Republican presidential candidates, as Charlie Pierce points out, even more committed to getting rid of the CFPB. Because how will the almighty market work if the banksters can't game it?

Bernie Sanders Urges Unions To Stand Up And Use Their Power To Crush The Koch Brothers

sanders-arms-up
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called on unions to rise up and join his political revolution to defeat the Koch brothers during a speech in Nevada.
At the Nevada State AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention, Senator Sanders said:
Today, as a result of the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision, the Koch brothers, the second wealthiest family in America, is prepared to spend some $900 million this election cycle — more than either the Republican cabal or the Democratic Party is likely to spend.

Why? What do the Koch brothers want? Let me tell you.

The Koch brothers and their billionaire allies don’t just want to cut Social Security, they want to eliminate Social Security; they don’t want to just cut Medicare, they want to eliminate Medicare; they don’t just want to cut healthcare at the VA, they want to eliminate the Veterans Administration; they don’t want to just cut the Postal Service, they want to eliminate it; they’re not only opposed to increasing the minimum wage, they don’t believe in the concept of the minimum wage; they don’t want to just cut the estate tax, they want to abolish it.

In other words, the Koch brothers and the billionaire class want it all. They want to give Americans the “freedom” to live in poverty working for $3 or $4 an hour without healthcare, without childcare, without a pension, without the ability to send their kids to college, and without any hope that their children will have a higher standard of living than they do.
And they understand that the major obstacle standing in the way of their extreme, right-wing agenda is the trade union movement.
That’s why they have fought so hard to eliminate unions in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and all over this country by ending collective bargaining rights.
And, that’s why I believe that we need to create a political revolution in this country of millions of workers, veterans, the elderly, the disabled, people of color standing together and telling the billionaire class that enough is enough! Your greed is destroying this country. You cannot have it all! You cannot continue to get tax breaks while children in this country are going hungry.

This country belongs to all of us, not just to a handful of millionaires and billionaires.
Senator Sanders was correct. For the Koch brothers to be defeated, unions are going to have to flex their muscles. Unions don’t have the money to match the Kochs, but they have something more important.
Union members are some of the best organizers in the country. The Kochs have the dollars, but unions have the ability to get out the vote.
Ordinary Americans can’t beat the Koch brothers in a dollar for dollar battle, but they can out vote the billionaires. The Kochs and other wingnut billionaires were routed in 2012 because regular Americans went to the polls and voted.
The political revolution that Bernie Sanders is leading is a movement of the people. Sanders has not only tapped into the anger of ordinary American.
Senator Sanders is giving them an avenue for action, and the action that the Koch brothers fear the most is millions of Americans coming out to vote on Election Day.

Big News For Democrats As Russ Feingold Leads Ron Johnson By 8 In Republican Cabal Poll

In Wisconsin, the situation has gotten so bad for the Republicans that they actually consider being down by 8 points "good news."…
johnson and feingold
A poll conducted by Republican pollster Luntz Global, released on August 17th, found Democratic Russ Feingold comfortably ahead of Republican Ron Johnson 50-42 percent in the 2016 Wisconsin Senate race. The contest is a rematch of the 2010 race, when Johnson unseated Feingold.
Senator Johnson rode a Republican cabal wave of theft in 2010, the same year Walker first stole Wisconsin. Although Walker survived a recall effort and again stole in 2014, Wisconsin voters have soured on Johnson. Many of them would like Russ Feingold to return to the U.S. Senate to represent them.
Although Feingold holds a solid lead in the Senate race in the Republican commissioned poll, Republican agitator Frank Luntz hilariously tried to spin the poll as a positive for Ron Johnson. In a press release, Luntz stated:
Wisconsin voters are clear: they want leaders who will make the world safer, more secure, and more stable for the long term. And Russ Feingold is not that leader.
Clearly Mr. Luntz had trouble understanding his own poll numbers. He interpreted a Democratic candidate beating a Republican by 8 percentage points, as a clear sign that Wisconsin voters do not want the guy with the big lead to win. Only in the deluded mindset of a Republican pollster could an 8-point deficit be considered proof that voters really, really want Ron Johnson to win.
In the Wisconsin senate race, the situation has gotten so bad for the Republicans that they actually consider being down by 8 points as “good news.” Not only did Luntz conduct the poll, but he decided to release it. Usually partisan pollsters are reluctant to release polls that show their candidate trailing, but apparently Luntz felt trailing by 8 was something he could spin as a sign that Ron Johnson still has a chance to hang onto his senate seat.
When an incumbent senator is reduced to having his supporters brag that he still has a chance to win, you can be pretty sure that behind the boast is a senator who is toast. The election is still over a year away, but at this point Johnson appears to be in serious danger of giving his seat back to Russ Feingold.

They’re Serious: Republicans Actively Calling To Shred the Constitution

The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.
The Republican cabal want to shred the Constitution to revert to legal white supremacy…
Constitution_burning
Of all the wingnut accusations targeting President Obama, the claim that he is “shredding the Constitution” may be the most popular; in part because most wingnuts are clueless about what is in the Constitution and because many honestly believe that an African American President is unconstitutional. Republicans are serial projectionists, that is accusing someone else of doing what they themselves are guilty of. And so it is that although most of the Republican actions that are contrary to the Constitution are less than obvious to the ignorant American, since 2010 they have made little secret they lust to shred the Constitution in a very, very big and very public way.
There is nothing more, except impose theocracy, that many wingnuts would rather do than deny certain groups of people inclusion in America; something this country has not done since four years before the Civil War. Since the election of Barack Obama, there has been a robust movement in this country yearning to deny non-christians, non-whites, and non-wingnuts the same rights as white 'christian' Republicans. If they were able, the neo-wingnut delusion would impose harsh prohibitions on who gets to be “an American;” something that did happen one other time in America.
From the nation’s founding until 1857, it was common law in America that all people born in this exceptional nation were automatically citizens; it just made sense. However, the racist Supreme Court abolished that “common law” in 1857 during a white supremacist crusade and ruled that no human being of African ancestry, whether they were a slave or free man or woman, could ever be a citizen of the United States; that “exceptional nation” founded on the fallacious notion that “all men are created equal.” Americans could only be white.
It took a bloody Civil War, Abraham Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation,” and ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868 to make what was a “common law” from America’s founding into a Constitutional right of citizenship; a right that more and more Republicans want abolished and not solely to eliminate birthright citizenship. It took a general election in which Hispanic voters supported Barack Obama in 2008, and prodding by teabaggers, to convince mainstream Republicans to embrace ‘white supremacy’ as official policy and make immigrants a particular target of Republicans’ evil machinations. Indeed, since 2010 Republicans have been targeting predominately Hispanic immigrants as part of their devotion to nativism and drive to deny them inclusion in America.
Nativism normally means severe hatred targeting immigrants and immigration, and nativists characteristically support any and all efforts to eliminate the legal status of specific ethnic, religious, or cultural groups the “natives” regard as dangerous and hostile to the “legitimate culture.” The nativists’ hatred of “other” is founded on the assumption the “other” cannot be assimilated into ‘the superior native culture‘ because, in the case of Republicans, the “others” are the wrong race, come from the wrong country, and vote for the wrong political party. To completely legitimize the nativists’ incomprehensible hatred for immigrants that are not of white European descent, Republicans in ever-growing numbers have joined the five-year crusade to officially shred the Constitution, particularly the 14th Amendment, because it guarantees what the Founding Fathers’ considered “common law;” birthright citizenship.
One of the more hateful anti-immigrant Republicans, next to Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Steve King (R-IA) started a crusade in 2010 to put an immediate end to the scourge of the U.S. Constitution; the 14th Amendment. According to King, the amendment that “grants everyone born in the United States of America the right of citizenship” is behind the “plague of anchor babies” and he wants Republicans to shred the Constitution to make it go away. King, and many other Republicans, claim Hispanics and their Democratic cohort use the 14th Amendment as a scheme to gain a stronghold in America by emigrating under the guise of seeking a better life, and then having children. King has introduced legislation to “shred the Constitution” and end the 14th Amendment in every session of Congress since 2010.
This crusade to abolish the 14th Amendment is not reserved for immigrant-obsessed King, or more recently Trump. On Sunday, Trump officially endorsed ending the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship and the following day the Koch candidate Walker called for “shredding the Constitution;” not necessarily to keep pace with Trump, but because Hispanics do not vote for Republicans like Walker who cannot stand the thought of them in the United States.
Ohio's idiot Kasich supported ending birthright citizenship religiously in the past, but now that he is attempting to be “less-evil” than other Republican presidential hopefuls he said combating illegal immigration may not require abolishing the 14th Amendment. Paul claimed the 14th Amendment does not apply to “illegal aliens” (Republican cabal epithet for Latinos) during his 2010 Senate campaign. Paul is a fool because it is impossible for a person born in America to be an illegal alien. Since then he has been pushing for a new Amendment to replace the 14th Amendment. Other candidates jumping on the anti-immigrant, shred the Constitution, bandwagon are; New Jersey’s moron Christie who said the United States Constitution “needs to be re-examined;” Louisiana's idiot Jindal curiously joined the nativists and said “We need to end birthright citizenship;” and Santorum supports ending what he calls rewards for illegal immigrants in the 14th Amendment; just one part of the Constitution he supports ‘shredding’ to keep America religiously pure and white.
The Republican “shred the Constitution’s 14th Amendment” fever even incited longtime immigration reform advocate Graham calling on Republicans to change the Constitution because he believes immigrants only come to America to simply “drop and leave” their kids. Texan, and religiously-twisted Republican, Gohmert is convinced that all those Latino immigrants were dropping “anchor babies” that al Qaeda uses to “raise radicals with American passports.”
What is an abominable is that all of the Republicans panting to “shred the Constitution” by abolishing the 14th Amendment are beneficiaries of birthright citizenship at some point in their ancestry. The only human beings that are natives to America are Native Americans; every other person’s ancestors emigrated, many “illegally,” from some foreign country which is why the Founding Fathers considered ‘birthright citizenship’ just common sense and common law; the natural order of things. Republicans just cannot see it that way and this is another case of teabagger Republicans wanting to “take their country back’ to America’s darkest period while the nation was being nearly rent in two because birthright citizenship for people of color was appalling; and Republicans want to shred the Constitution to revert back to legal white supremacy.
The Constitution is clear; anyone born in America is a citizen and the Supreme Court has consistently held that the Fourteenth Amendment grants automatic citizenship to “anyone” born on U.S. soil. It is the only ruling the Court can possibly make because there is nothing in that Amendment that is in any way, shape, or form ambiguous. What is curious is that so many of Republicans seeking to be pretender are purposely degrading an already pathetic standing with the Hispanic community.
Some shrieking heads and political wind machines claim Republicans are heading towards a dangerous nativist trend, and one wonders exactly where they have been for the past six years. Because this anti-immigrant, shred the Constitution, trend did not begin with Trump; he is just tapping into a well-conditioned, angry and hateful segment of the population that hates “the other,” and Republicans are confident that the wingnut base will gleefully support shredding the Constitution if they think it protects their precious white America.

Hillary Clinton Nails it: 2016 is the Attack of the Republican Clones

Clinton points out that all 2016 Republican contenders are the same, and they do have their misogyny in common, and wear it on their sleeves…
Hillary-republicans (1)
Look, let’s not kid ourselves. As Hillary pointed out in a tweeted graphic, all 16 Republican candidates are the same, whether its Trump’s hair and pizzazz, or, as Larry Wilmore says, his helicopter. Election cycle 2016 is literally the attack of the Republican clones.
Position-wise, all they offer us is varying levels of extremism. There is not one moderate Republican among them, because moderate Republicans are RINOs in today’s wingnut lexicon. They’re not allowed, as Jon Huntsman found out in 2012, and he came nowhere near to running in 2016. He’d learned his lesson.
That doesn’t mean Republicans aren’t willing to pretend to be moderates, impersonating reasonable people taking a sober look at all the facts, and then rejecting anything smacking of opposition to their authoritarianism. You know, things like freedom, religious or otherwise. Things like marriage equality and reproductive rights, just to name a couple of examples.
However, there can be no claim to moderate positions as long as you are against this, and all Republicans are against this.
That’s right. Women. Women as autonomous beings with all the rights and privileges of any Republican living. Wingnut women like Sarah Palin will tell you they are the real women. You know, women who are subservient to men in all respects, who are willing to collaborate on their own subjugation.
But real men trust women. Trust women to vote. Trust women to hold down the toughest jobs. Trust women to think for themselves and make their own reproductive choices. Real men don’t expect women to go without conception, give birth, and then refuse to let them breastfeed.
Real men don’t want women to be like Sarah Palin. Or any of her clone-replacements, like Joni Ernst. Real men aren’t afraid of smart, powerful women like Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren, or Michelle Obama.
Because real men don’t feel like they’re being persecuted if women have the same rights they do. Republican men, on the other hand, have their misogyny in common, and they wear it on their sleeves.
And in fact, women seem to realize who the real men are. For all the talk of  Trump, and all Trump’s claims that literally everybody likes him, including those he excoriates daily, women aren’t impressed. In other words, Hillary says they are all the same, and she’s not alone.
According to Gallup, “Trump has a lower favorability rating among Republican women than among Republican men (50% vs. 59%, respectively) [and] this gender gap is fairly typical for many of the current Republican cabal candidates.”
GOP-gender-gap
Cruz is most reviled, and Gallup says only “Graham, Jeb and Pataki are the only candidates who enjoy similar favorability ratings among men and women nationally,” but none of them are prime candidates for a Sadie Hawkins dance.
Gallup concludes,
Women in the U.S. are, in general, more likely to identify as Democrats than to identify as Republicans. Further, according to exit polls, 55% of women supported President Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election. This persistent gender gap in U.S. politics presents a continuing challenge for Republican candidates. Another challenge for Republican pretender candidates is that even among women who identify with or lean toward the Republican cabal, women tend to be less likely than men to view Republican cabal candidates favorably.
Larry Wilmore singles out Trump and his helicopter, saying “Trump steals the show with his shiny new helicopter. OK, I give up. How small is this guy’s penis?” But let’s not ignore an insecurity factor spread among Republican candidates more or less equally. They just show it in ways other than helicopters.
You have to wonder at Republicans who think their endless denigration of women is going to make them popular. It is not only Trump who thinks insulting people makes them like him. All Republicans seem to feel this way, because all of them are this way. As Hillary said, they’re all the same. They all operate out of the same context, and we should not expect otherwise.
It is as simple as this: if you like and trust women, you are probably not a Republican.

Republicans Reeling As Poll Shows Voters Don’t Care About Hillary Clinton Emails

hillary clinton emails press conference las vegas
Republicans are trying to stop Hillary Clinton by making her emails into a presidential disqualifier, but a new poll shows that the American people don’t care about her emails or her server.
Via CNN:
Clinton maintains this edge in the general election race despite a growing perception that by using a personal email account and server while serving as secretary of state she did something wrong. About 56% say so in the new poll, up from 51% in March. About 4-in-10 (39%) now say she did not do anything wrong by using personal email. Among Democrats, the share saying she did not do anything wrong has dipped from 71% in March to 63% now, and just 37% of independents say she did not do wrong by using the personal email system.

…..

But the fading numbers haven’t hurt her against some Republican cabal contenders. Clinton has her biggest lead over Fiorina, topping her 53% to 43% among registered voters. She leads Bush by a nearly identical margin, 52% to 43%. And Clinton tops both Trump (51% to 45%) and Walker (52% to 46%) by 6 points each.
Republicans have been successful in using the email scandal to lower Clinton’s approval ratings, but those lower approval ratings have not translated into Clinton trailing any of her potential Republican opponents in general election matchups.
The takeaway from this data is that even if voters believe that Hillary Clinton did something wrong with her emails, the majority of them are still going to vote for her in November 2016.
In other words, voters don’t care about Hillary Clinton’s emails.
For Republicans, Clinton’s emails have become the latest in a long line of recent conspiracy theories that includes Benghazi, the IRS scandal, and Obama’s birth certificate. Every second that a Republican presidential candidate wastes talking about emails is a win for Democrats, but they will be talking about something that the broader electorate does not care about.
The media loves the Clinton email story because it allows them to recycle their old Clinton scandal narratives. It is easy copy, especially during a slow summer political season, but it is not making a difference with voters.
Republicans better come with a new plan.
The email scandal isn’t working as a majority of registered voters are still willing to vote for Hillary Clinton to be the next President Of The United States.

Republicans Are Self-Destructing By Convincing Themselves That Trump Could Beat Clinton

clinton-trump-01-800According to a new CNN poll, Donald Trump is now competitive with Hillary Clinton in a general election contest because white male Republicans are convincing themselves that Trump could win.
CNN reported, “The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).”
Trump isn’t picking up support from the broader electorate. His rise in general election performance is directly connected to growth in support for him by the Republican base. The numbers indicate that Republican voters are engaging in behavior that has become common over the last three presidential election cycles.
Republicans have become prone to picking the candidate that they think can win in November, nominating that candidate, and brainwashing themselves into believing that a candidate that doesn’t appeal to the rest of the electorate WILL win.
In 2012, Republicans convinced themselves that all of the polls were “skewed.” They threw out all signs of reality and delusionally believed that Mitt Romney was certain to win against Obama. When Obama cleaned Romney’s clock on election night, Karl Rove melted down on Fox News, the Koch brothers wasted a ton of money, and Barack Obama was a two-term president.
Republicans are repeating the same behavior as the nation moves into 2016. Mitt Romney has been replaced by the unelectable Donald Trump, but the other factors are largely the same. Donald Trump, like Mitt Romney, is promising victory on an extremist ideological agenda, and Republican voters are buying it.
The cause of this self-destructiveness among the GOP can be traced back to the party’s search for another Ronald Reagan. Republicans love Trump, who like Reagan, is an actor who knows how to use over the top rhetoric to get maximum attention. Unlike Reagan, Trump can’t win.
The reality is that Hillary Clinton leads all of the Republican candidates in the new CNN/ORC poll. Trump’s anti-immigrant statements are only making the Democratic coalition stronger.
This poll is good news for Democrats because it is evidence that Republicans are in the process of convincing themselves to make another horrible choice that will doom them to defeat in 2016.

Jeb says that the "balance" between privacy and security has "gone the wrong way." Because there's "no evidence" that spying violates civil liberties.
He also wants to ban strong crypto: "It makes it harder for the American government to do its job while protecting civil liberties to make sure evildoers aren't in our midst."
Jeb doubled down on his assertions that there is "no evidence" the data collection violated civil liberties. "I've found not one" case, he said.
The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent bipartisan agency, declared NSA's phone records collections program illegal in 2014, and a federal court of appeals reached the same conclusion earlier this year.
A May analysis from the Justice Department found that FBI agents interviewed by the inspector general's office "did not identify any major case developments" that came from using Section 215 that allowed the bulk records collection.
Bush also criticized private technology firms for using encryption to make it harder for their customers to be surveilled. "It makes it harder for the American government to do its job while protecting civil liberties to make sure evildoers aren't in our midst," he said.
