Bernie Sanders Hits The Kochs Where It Hurts With People Before Polluters Plan

Bernie-Sanders-point
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is proposing a new plan that would deliver a devastating blow to the Koch brothers and the Republicans they own.
In a statement Sen. Sanders said:
Pope Francis is right. This planet is moving in a suicidal direction unless we effectively combat climate change and transform our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and sustainable energy,” Sanders said.
The scientists are virtually unanimous that climate change is real, is caused by human activity and is already causing devastating problems in the United States and around the world. And, they tell us, if we do not act boldly the situation will only become much worse in years to come in terms of drought, floods, extreme storms and acidification of the oceans.
The United States must lead the world in working with China, Russia, India and the international community to break our energy dependence on fossil fuel. Sadly, we now have a Republican cabal that is more concerned about protecting the profits of Exxon, BP and Shell and the coal industry than protecting the planet. While fossil fuel companies are raking in record profits, climate change ravages our planet and our people – all because the wealthiest industry in the history of our planet has bribed politicians into ignoring science.
The Sanders plan would:
– Cut U.S. carbon pollution by 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050 by putting a tax on carbon pollution, repealing fossil fuel subsidies and making massive investments in energy efficiency and clean, sustainable energy such as wind and solar power.
– Create a Clean-Energy Workforce of 10 million good-paying jobs by creating a 100% clean energy system.
Protect low-income and minority communities, who are hit first and worst by the causes and impacts of climate change, while also protecting existing energy-sector workers as they transition into clean energy and other jobs.
The Koch fortune is based in fossil fuels, which is why the Koch brothers have secretly donated at least $79 million to climate change science denial organizations.
The fossil fuel industry supplies a substantial sum of the dark money that Republicans use to fund their campaigns. A serious plan to combat climate change would not only clean up the environment, but it would also clean part of a dirty and corrupt campaign finance system.
Sen. Sanders’ plan would hit the Kochs in the wallet and strike a blow against the systemic legalized bribery of our post-Citizens United campaign finance system.
Bernie Sanders is proposing a plan that could both save our planet and our democracy.

Sorry Republicans – Climate Envoy Says Wingnut Votes Aren’t Hurting Paris Talks

Obama administration's top negotiator in Paris said wingnut votes against the president's environmental agenda aren't hurting the US position. …
Paris Climat Eiffel Tower
The Obama administration’s top negotiator for the Paris climate talks said Friday that congressional votes against the White House’s environmental agenda aren’t hurting the United States’ position.
Todd Stern, the State Department’s special envoy for climate change, told reporters in Paris on Wednesday that he’s fielded questions about the Republican-backed votes from other diplomats, but he’s assured them that President Obama’s policies will stand.
Stern made the remarks a day after the House voted to overturn two landmark Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that require power plants to cut their carbon dioxide emissions.
“I don’t actually think that has much of an effect here,” Stern told reporters. Obama plans to veto both measures.
“It produces questions, so I have had countries ask me about, but what I have said is that the Clean Power Plan rule is going to go forward,” he said.
“The president’s not going to accept such resolutions, and we are entirely confident that the Clean Power Plan will go forward. And so, to the extent that I’m asked — I’ve been asked once or twice — I just explain that.”
Because of Obama’s veto threat, Congress’s action was largely symbolic, timed to coincide with the opening days of the Paris talks.
The wingnuts want to send a signal to world leaders that Obama’s pledge to cut the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent to 28 percent cannot be met because the power plant rules will be overturned, be it by the next president, Congress or the federal courts.
“The message could not be more clear that Republican and Democrats in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House do not support the president’s climate agenda and the international community should take note,” Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, said in a statement.
The Senate passed similar resolutions in November.
It’s just one tactic Republicans are using to try to derail the United Nations talks, where negotiators are trying to reach an international agreement to combat climate change. That deal is not likely to impose legally binding emissions cuts, however, because some countries, including the U.S., do not think they could approve such an accord.

Trump Sycophant Claims Press Doesn't Fact-Check President Obama Or Hillary Clinton

For Trump Sycophants, It’s Unconditional Love

by John DeProspo
Donald-TrumpThe pattern by now is all too familiar. No matter how outrageous the comment or how verifiable the lie, Trump supporters will stick with their man. The truth simply does not matter to devout Trump backers. They are too enamored by the force of his personality.
Trump has found what few of us ever find in our lifetimes: unconditional love. So he lied about seeing thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrate the attack on the Twin Towers. So deporting eleven million illegal immigrants is a ridiculous idea. So what!
Trump is like a divine shepherd who can lead his sheeple anywhere… even if it’s to the slaughterhouse!
The mainstream media can spend all the time it wants pointing out Trump’s distortions, misrepresentations and outright lies. It will not matter in the end. Trump has found unconditional love from his acolytes.
And as with all unconditional love, the more their revered one is attacked by his critics, the more his followers will circle the wagons and come to his defense. Logic and facts do not matter for those blinded by true adulation.
Will the steady, roughly 25% support of Republican base be enough to carry Trump to the presidential nomination? Probably not… unless Trump can build on his base of die-hard, smitten supporters. The odds are that all those Trump sycophants who have found unconditional love for their candidate are all present and accounted for.

Wingnut Brain Abnormalities Inform That Gun Madness Is Here To Stay

To gun nut zealots, every mass shooting provides another undeniable and convincing argument that what America needs most is more guns, not less… More guns (1)
No matter how bad of a pretender Ronald Reagan was for myriad reasons, he did have enough sense to advocate for measures to protect the people from themselves without deleting the 2nd Amendment. In fact, President Obama and sane Democrats’ gun safety proposals are not as robust as those that Reagan promoted, but of course Reagan was a white guy.
Reagan saidI do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an assault rifle is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.” He also signed legislation as California governor “prohibiting the carrying of firearms on your person, in your vehicle, and in any public place or on the street,” as well as a 15-day waiting period for firearm purchases.
On signing gun safety laws, the wingnut demigod said, “There’s no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.” As pretender, Reagan signed a ban on fully automatic rifles, supported legislation for background checks, a waiting period for potential gun owners, and was an ardent supporter of a ban on assault-weapons and the Brady Bill.
Of course, those days are history and Republicans are unwilling to “take their country back” to an era of gun safety sense; they are just too afraid of everything. It is why there is not a chance in Hell there will be any legislation to help protect Americans from gun violence, and if there were it would be fundamentally useless with the past six years of NRA fear-mongering and gun proliferation that created an already well-armed population.
One commentator said the status quo on guns in the US will never change without “overwhelming political force” because evidence, death tolls, or rational debate will never have any effect on gun zealots. That assessment is only half right.
To garner “overwhelming political force” for minimal gun safety laws, a significant number of Americans will have to be convinced using evidence and debate. With a terrified population, and guns and gun violence now informing America’s “worldview and identity” as a “structurally violent society,” evidence and persuasion, even emotional persuasion, to change is futile no matter how many mass shootings or gun casualties.
It is noteworthy that with well-over 300 million and counting guns in a population of roughly 320 million, any attempt at using “overwhelming political force” to pass a gun safety law will be met with “overwhelming firepower;” it is the result of Republican, the NRA, “false patriots,” and wingnut conditioning of the population with pathological brain deformities and psychological dysfunction. For America, the die is cast and mass shootings and out-of-control gun deaths are here to stay; the idea of America being any different than violent nations like Iraq and Afghanistan is hardly arguable.
Every single time there is a mass shooting, a couple-hundred Americans seriously believe the deaths and carnage will provide the emotional and convincing argument to halt the proliferation of guns. But to terrified gun nut zealots, every mass shooting provides another undeniable and convincing argument that what America needs most is more guns, not less.
As surrogate for the National Rifle Association, frightened evangelical Cuban-Canadian immigrant Cruz said the increase in mass shootings means that now more than ever, “the American people must be armed to get rid of bad guys by using our guns.”
Cruz took advantage of the wingnut brain’s abnormalities and psychological dysfunction and said gun safety measures are President Obama and Hillary Clinton’s plan to “strip us of our fundamental right to protect our homes, our lives, and our families while they refuse to protect America and stand up to Islam.” It was typical fear mongering that Cruz knows easily manipulates his terrified, psychologically bent, and abnormal-brained base.
According to an ever-growing body of psychological and social scientific research, the reason “liberals and wingnuts disagree about politics is because they are different people at the level of personality, psychology, and physiological and genetic traits.” Translation: wingnuts are physically abnormal and psychologically incapable of not being frightened and cannot exist without a loaded firearm at their side.
In a paper by John Hibbing of the University of Nebraska, research shows that “political wingnuts have a negativity bias meaning they are physiologically more attuned to negative (threatening, disgusting) stimuli in their environments;” it is why Republicans have such an easy task keeping their base frightened of everything that is “not white and evangelically wingnut.”
Other research this column has referenced in the past to demonstrate why Republican voters, although dirt stupid, are driven by abject fear is due to an abnormality in the brain preventing them from normal human cognitive and emotional dynamics. The Hibbing research teams found, and reported, that wingnuts have larger right amygdalae than liberals or normal human beings.
A normal amygdalae regulates basic pleasure and fear responses that wingnuts are incapable of performing. Besides being terrified of anything Republicans tell them to, an abnormally functioning amygdala is responsible for a world of psychological disorders and conditions including wild irrational fear, high anxiety and PTSD.
As the President has reiterated often, if Republicans and their frightened base could not be moved to support the most basic gun safety law, background checks, after 20 children and six adults were slaughtered like animals, by a white 'christian', nothing will move them to act. It does not matter if it is a mass shooting in a theater, cult, women’s health clinic, or a school campus, Republicans will not act because they are as frightened of the NRA as their base is everything non-christian, non-white, and non-male. Although prayers are not going to stop gun violence or mass shootings, if it makes decent people feel better, then by all means pray away because it is about effective as what this country is doing now.

Bernie Sanders Devastates Republicans With Common Sense On Guns

Bernie Sanders gun control face the nation
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) devastated the Republican argument against keeping the weapons of the hands of criminals with common sense on CBS’s Face The Nation.
Sanders said:
I was just at a press conference the other day talking about the need for increased gun control. I don’t think anybody believes that it’s a magic formula. Clearly, though, there is an obvious common sense consensus, though, John, in this country that guns should not be falling into the hands of people who should not be having them.

And obvious, that goes without saying, I don’t think this is very hard to understand that terrorists, or potential terrorists, should not have guns. People who are being barred from flying on airplanes should not have guns.
I believe we must improve and expand instant background checks. I believe we’ve got to do away with this gun show loophole. About forty percent of the guns in this country are sold outside of the purview of the instant background check process. I think we need. I agree with The New York Times. I think it does not make sense to me that we have guns designed for military purposes that can kill enormous numbers of people in a very short period of time being sold and distributed in the United States, and I support a ban on assault weapons.
I think we need to do away with the strawman provision so that people can legally buy guns and then give them to criminals. And I think we need a revolution in mental health. And that revolution is about making sure that the many thousands of people who are walking the streets of America today who are suicidal or homicidal get the help they need, and they get it now, not two months from now.
Not all, but many of the deaths from mass shootings are preventable by doing exactly what Sen. Sanders suggested. It is common sense. Guns should not be easily legally available to those individuals who have violent records and mental issues. Military grade weapons that are capable of killing dozens to hundreds of innocent people in a few minutes should not be easily available to all who want them.
A background check system is worthless if nearly half gun sales transactions are happening outside of the system. Suspected terrorists should not be able to legally buy guns.
No one is talking about destroying the Second Amendment or taking away everyone’s guns. Sen. Sanders also defended his one vote against a gun control bill, but by this point in the campaign, it should be clear to everyone that Bernie Sanders is not a friend of the NRA.
The best way to change the mass shooting enabling environment in this country is to use a some common sense. The Republican arguments against the steps that Sen. Sanders discussed make no sense.
Bernie Sanders showed that the path to defeating the gun industry runs through logic and common sense.

Hillary Clinton Sends Cruz Back To The Kiddie Table By Calling Out His Idiocy

Hillary Clinton Takes Down Ted Cruz
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton took Cruz to school on ABC’s This Week, and in the process exposed the Republican’s tough talk as empty, brainless, idiocy.
Transcript via ABC’s This Week:
STEPHANOPOULOS: Some of your potential rivals on the Republican side say we have to do more overseas as well. Cruz says we have to carpet bomb ISIS.

CLINTON: Well, that’s an easy thing to say, you know. He’s never had any responsibility for trying to figure out who the bad guys are and who innocent civilians are. Clearly we have to have a much more robust air campaign against ISIL targets, against the oil infrastructure, against their leadership. I think you’ll hear that from the president. And part of what I have been arguing for, for quite some time now, is that we’ve got to do a better job of getting back the Sunnis on the ground, along with the Kurds, who can be the fighters who will actually take back territory with air cover and with targeted attacks on ISIL infrastructure. We still are going to have to have people fighting.
An example of what Clinton was referring can found in Cruz’s latest campaign ad that is running in Iowa.
In the ad, Cruz promised to rebuild the military, kill the terrorists, and never apologize for America.
What the ad doesn’t say is what Clinton pointed out. How is Cruz going to know who the terrorists are? Is he planning on killing everyone?
Cruz has taken the Trump model of empty tough talk and put it on steroids.
Republicans are trying to turn their opponent’s biggest strength into a weakness by making the presidential election about foreign policy. By following this path, they are playing into Hillary Clinton’s biggest strength. The Republican candidates have never worked in the White House. Cruz has no idea how to tell a “good guy” from a “bad guy.”
If times are really as dangerous as Republicans suggest, wouldn’t it be wise to have a president who has foreign policy experience? Clinton subtly contrasted her knowledge and experience with Cruz’s rhetoric to paint a picture of a candidate who has no idea what he is talking about.
Hillary Clinton made Cruz look clueless, and showed why the Republican presidential pretenders aren’t ready for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Apparently if You Don’t Call Them by Name, You Can Make Assault Weapons Go Away

A wingnut radio hack got Fox News' Chris Wallace to agree to be misleading and vague by not using a term the gun industry first applied…
cbs-ar15
It turns out we can make our own reality and bully certain media figures (I can’t use the word journalist) to sanctify it, as did St. Louis-based hate radio hack Jamie Allman to Fox News host Chris Wallace on Thursday. Wallace was appearing on KFTK’s Allman in the Morning when Allman protested that,
“[I]t agitates people … like me and my listeners, who are gun owners” that the media uses the term “assault weapon.” He added that “people who are gun owners never call — that’s not any official name of any weapon out there — an ‘assault weapon.'”
According to wingnuts who approve of lots of innocent people being gunned down on a regular basis by assault weapons, the term “assault weapon” is misleading. Yet according to Phillip Peterson Gun Digest Buyer’s Guide to Assault Weapons (2008),
The popularly held idea that the term ‘assault weapon’ originated with anti-gun activists is wrong. The term was first adopted by manufacturers, wholesalers, importers and dealers in the American firearms industry to stimulate sales of certain firearms that did not have an appearance that was familiar to many firearms owners. The manufacturers and gun writers of the day needed a catchy name to identify this new type of gun.
And Media Matters pointed out that,
Wingnuts in media have adopted the false National Rifle Association claim that the term “assault weapon” was invented by proponents of assault weapons bans in order to arbitrarily single out certain firearms for further regulation. However, before the gun industry trade association attempted to rebrand assault weapons as “modern sporting rifles” in 2009 — a change in terminology also adopted by the NRA — the gun industry and firearm publications routinely used the term assault weapon to describe the very military-style semi-automatic rifles that would be covered by Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s assault weapons ban.
[…]
The truth is that military-style semi-automatic rifles were called assault weapons because that is what gun manufacturers and gun enthusiasts called them. The term has played a key role in the ongoing effort of the gun industry to rebrand and market military-style weaponry to civilians. Now, as legislation supported by a majority of Americans has been proposed to ban these weapons, the NRA and its gun industry and media allies are using semantics and terminology arguments to downplay the dangers of a class of weapons often associated with horrific mass shootings and law enforcement killings.
But Chris Wallace replied like the docile little Fox News 'personality' that he is:

“[I]f that’s something that ticks people off because it’s so imprecise, and such a kind of cover word that means nothing, I don’t want to do that.” He then pledged, “You will not hear the word assault weapon out of my mouth on Sunday. I may fall back into it later, but on Sunday I will be more precise”

Take a listen courtesy of Media Matters for America:
WALLACE: Thank you for the information, because if that’s something that ticks people off because it’s so imprecise, and such a kind of cover word that means nothing, I don’t want to do that.
ALLMAN: Yeah it’s almost like it’s an — and again, I’m not accusing you of this. It’s almost like an editorial description of a gun. And that’s all I’m saying is that it drives a lot of us crazy when we hear assault weapon because —
WALLACE: I don’t want you to be driven crazy.
ALLMAN: No, I’m just saying if I can have an impact on a premier journalist like yourself, then I think I’ve made some headway.
WALLACE: Well, OK, no, listen.
ALLMAN: And we all fall into that.
WALLACE: You will not hear the word assault weapon out of my mouth on Sunday. I may fall back into it later, but on Sunday I will be more precise.
ALLMAN: That’s good, OK.
Maybe we can just call them “spoons” from now on. It’s much less threatening. The problem is, these are a class of weapons. They are not shotguns. They are not hunting rifles of the traditional variety. They are semi-automatic, can take flash suppressors or muzzle breaks, they use detachable, high capacity magazines, and have folding or collapsible stocks.
We have to call them something, don’t we? It is not those who use the term “assault weapon” who are trying to be misleading.
And after all, as pointed out, we leftists didn’t invent the term; the industry did. The military M-16 is an assault rifle. The AR-15 so popular these days, and used in the San Bernadino shootings, was a precursor to the M-16 and was itself originally developed for the military. Why not call a spade a spade?
And if these things are favored by sportsmen and for home defense, they are also favored by home-grown domestic terrorists.
As CBS News pointed out Friday,
An AR-15 was used to kill nine people at Umpqua Community College in Oregon in October.
It was also the weapon used in the murders of 12 people at a Colorado movie theater in 2012.
And an AR-15 was used in the 2012 murders of 20 first graders and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut.
Controversial the term may be, but many terms are controversial and others that are not, ought to be (pro-life comes glaringly to mind as part of this discussion), and we cannot make assault weapons go away by calling them something else. All we can do is sanitize the term in order to downplay the dangerous nature of these weapons.
Sure, any gun can kill somebody, but see how far you get taking an old bolt-action rifle into a theater. Even terrifying as a sawed off shotgun is, you won’t get many shots off before you’re overpowered. The assault weapon does what the assault weapons is supposed to do. It’s just that we should not be allowing it to do that against civilians in our own schools, businesses, and theaters.
